In 2011, Thermoseal will complete the installation of a brand new, 250,000 Watt roof-top Solar Panel System at its insulating glass facility in Gloucester City, NJ, and we will then be able to generate approximately 50% of our total energy requirements via clean, renewable solar technology. We will be one of a very small number of "green" glass fabricators in the nation, and we expect to reduce our carbon footprint by more than 35%.

UPDATES:

5/31/2011 - Today we are producing 130,000 Watts of AC power @ 480V. (Equivalent of 11,500 hair dryers running simultaneously.) This electricity is being used by Thermoseal instantaneously, or it will go back to the PSE&G electrical grid to “turn our meter backwards” when our instantaneous consumption is low (e.g., weekends.)

The COMPLETED Thermoseal Industries, LLC Solar System, 238kW (238,000 Watt) rating, 1,014 Solar Panels rated a 235 Watts DC Power per panel. Ballasted system consisting of structural aluminum racking with concrete ballast blocks set on aluminum trays to "weight the system down" onto the roof.

5/11/2011 - As of late yesterday afternoon, we were producing SOLAR POWER on the ROOF of THERMOSEAL at 400 Water Street.

Today, which was a bright, sunny early May day, we were producing approximately 200,000 Watts of instantaneous AC power at 11:30 AM, which was going back into the PSE&G Grid, and which was effectively turning our meter "backwards".

The NEW PSE&G meter that was installed a few weeks ago actually runs "both ways."

When we are generating solar and no one is here (e.g., holidays and weekends), the meter turns "backward," and reduces our total consumption on our PSE&G bill. When we are running the tempering furnace and running other equipment that consumes power, the meter runs "forward," although it will run slower when the sun is shining on the solar panels and the panels are generating electricity.

Tomorrow at 10AM (THU, MAY 12th) the system will be commissioned by Dynamic Solar, which means they will officially turn it over from their installation team to their monitoring team, and also to Thermoseal as the system owner/operator.

Total System Size:
  1. Rated Size: 235kW (or 235,000 Watts, which is comparable to 235 one-thousand watt hair dryers operating simultaneously)
  2. Expected Output: 250kW (based on our Latitude, which improves expected output a bit)
  3. Operating Voltage: 480V DC, which is converted to 480V AC by the two Inverters on Pine Street
  4. Number of Panels: 1,014
  5. Power per Panel: 235 Watts
  6. Racking: Tubular Aluminum with Cinder Block ballast on top of aluminum trays
  7. Expected Panel Life: 25 Years
Over the next week or two, we will install a monitor in the Front Lobby that will show the system power generation in "real time," so we can point out to people that we are "making power" while they are standing in the lobby.

This is a BIG STEP in our "GO GREEN Initiative," and in our drive to lower costs and become better environmental stewards!
